Fuel Tank Rupture Cleanup on Interstate 840 | Enviro Medics Hazmat Response

On April 1, the Enviro Medics Emergency Spill Response Team was requested to Interstate 840 Interstate 840 for a significant fuel spill caused by a roadway hazard. The driver of a commercial truck struck a piece of pipe lying in the roadway, which ruptured the fuel tank and caused a rapid release of diesel.

As is often the case, this type of accident never happens when a truck is low on fuel—this one had over ¾ of a tank and lost nearly all of it before our team arrived. The driver smelled diesel, pulled off to the shoulder, and attempted to slow the leak as best as possible while waiting for help.

Fortunately, there were no creeks, streams, or waterways nearby, preventing the spill from becoming a major environmental contamination event. Upon arrival, our trained technicians quickly plugged the rupture, saving the remaining fuel and preventing additional loss.

From there, our crew ensured the truck had enough fuel to be moved to a safe staging location, where a tow company could hook up and transport the vehicle for repairs—without further diesel release or roadway hazards.

Thanks to the quick thinking of our supervisor and the coordinated efforts of our 24/7 hazmat team, we were able to:

  • Stop the active leak

  • Save usable fuel

  • Keep the truck operational

  • Prevent environmental impact

  • Keep the incident small and fully controlled
