Industrial Tank Cleaning and Confined Space Entry Project in Tennessee

Enviro Medics recently completed a confined space tank cleaning project involving the cleaning and preparation of a non-hazardous waste storage tank before it was returned to service.

While the material inside the tank was classified as non-hazardous waste, the project still presented the unique hazards associated with confined space entry. Working safely inside enclosed tanks requires careful planning, continuous atmospheric monitoring, ventilation, specialized personal protective equipment, and trained personnel.

Before entry operations began, crews conducted atmospheric monitoring to evaluate oxygen levels and identify any potentially hazardous conditions within the tank. Continuous monitoring remained in place throughout the project to ensure a safe working environment for personnel.

To improve air quality and maintain safe working conditions, ram fans and forced-air ventilation systems were utilized to circulate fresh air throughout the confined space. Personnel entering the tank wore appropriate personal protective equipment, including powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs), protective suits, gloves, and protective footwear.

Once entry conditions were verified and safe work procedures established, crews entered the tank and removed accumulated waste and residue from interior surfaces. Materials were collected and removed while maintaining continuous communication and safety oversight throughout the operation.

Why Confined Space Tank Cleaning Requires Specialized Training

Many industrial tanks, vessels, vaults, and process containers qualify as confined spaces. Even when hazardous materials are not present, confined spaces can present significant risks including:

  • Oxygen-deficient atmospheres

  • Limited access and egress

  • Poor ventilation

  • Heat stress

  • Airborne contaminants

  • Slip, trip, and fall hazards

Proper confined space procedures help protect workers while allowing maintenance and cleaning operations to be completed safely and efficiently.
