Diesel Fuel Spill Cleanup at Distribution Facility in Tullahoma, Tennessee

When a refrigerated trailer experienced a fuel system failure at a distribution facility in Tullahoma, Tennessee, Enviro Medics responded to contain and remediate the diesel fuel release before it could create additional environmental and operational concerns.

Approximately 20 gallons of diesel fuel were released onto the facility's asphalt parking area. While relatively small compared to highway tanker incidents, even minor fuel spills can create safety hazards, environmental liabilities, and long-term damage to pavement surfaces if not addressed quickly.

Upon arrival, our crew assessed the impacted area and immediately began containment and cleanup operations. Absorbent materials were applied to capture free-standing fuel and prevent the release from spreading across the facility.

After recovering impacted absorbents and residual product, crews performed bioremediation of the affected pavement. Bioremediation helps accelerate the natural breakdown of petroleum hydrocarbons while reducing the long-term effects diesel fuel can have on asphalt surfaces. Left untreated, diesel fuel can soften pavement, deteriorate asphalt binders, and contribute to premature surface failure.

The release was successfully contained and remediated without impacts to nearby stormwater systems or surrounding property.

Why Small Fuel Spills Matter

Many facility managers focus on major environmental incidents, but smaller releases often occur more frequently and can still create significant issues if not properly addressed. Diesel fuel spills can:

  • Create slip hazards for employees and vehicle traffic

  • Damage asphalt and concrete surfaces

  • Enter storm drains and drainage systems

  • Trigger environmental reporting requirements in some situations

  • Lead to costly pavement repairs if left untreated

Prompt cleanup and remediation help reduce these risks while protecting facility operations.
